Vivienne Westwood F/W 1990/1991 - “Portrait”

For this collection, Westwood drew inspiration from oil paintings as a “display of material wealth”. She printed images of paintings by Boucher - this one Shepherd Watching a Sleeping Shepherdess - onto her corsets, as well as taking literal inspiration in her designs from clothing featured in paintings by other artists (including Winterhalter and the 18th century painting The Boy with a Bat). She also drew ideas from the furniture of Andre Charles Boulle. The women in the show walked on platform shoes - “putting [them] on a pedestal as though she had stepped out of a painting”.

“If you were to press your heart close up against somebody else’s heart eventually your hearts will start beating at the same time. And two little babies in an incubator, their hearts will beat at the same time. Love that. So if you have somebody in your life that is prone to anxiety, like myself, and if you happen to be a calm person, you could come up and hug me heart to heart and my heart hopefully would slow to yours. And I just love that idea. Or maybe yours would speed up to mine. But either way, we’ll be there together.”

Shaun Leane: He was always fascinated by the spine. So he asked me to create a corset, which was the spine with the rib cage, so that the girl could actually wear this as a corset on the outside of her body, so we would see the beauty of these bone structures on the outside, attached to the dress.

And as we were doing it, Alexander came to me and said, “Will you put a tail on this?” And where he got that idea was out of the film The Omen. When the mother of the omen was discovered—her skeleton—she was half-raven and half-dog, and he was quite inspired by this.
